Amarillo Globe News athlete of the year his senior year
Class 2A third-team all-state by the Texas Sportswriters Association his senior year after earning honorable mention as a junior
District 1-2A MVP as a senior after earning co-offensive MVP accolades his junior year
Completed 283-of-437 passes for 3,815 yards and 46 touchdowns his senior year
Was 270-of-503 for 3,219 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior and 167-of-325 for 2,140 yards with 19 touchdowns as a sophomore
Also excelled in basketball, baseball and track and field
In basketball, he was a Class 2A all-state honoree his senior year and a member of the Amarillo Globe News super team
As a second baseman in baseball, he was the district MVP as a junior and again as a senior to go with third-team all-state honors by the Texas Sportswriters Association his senior year
In track and field, he won a district title in the high jump and was the Class 2A area champion in the same event his senior year
Member of the National Honor Society and academic all-state honoree in football, basketball, baseball and track and field
A superintendent scholar and distinguished program graduate
Member and officer with the student council
Also participated with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and UIL Theatre.

Son of Phyllis and Warren Cornelius
Comes from a remarkably athletic family that includes 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Josh Davis (his cousin), NFL defensive end Brandon Green, another cousin who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars and played with the St. Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks, and Casey Bookout, another cousin who was a standout baseball player at Oklahoma
