Week 9: DNP — injury.
Week 8: DNP — Texas announced that Ewers suffered a Grade 2 AC joint sprain of his throwing shoulder. He's expected to miss 2–4 weeks. Maalik Murphy will take his place at the quarterback position.
Week 7: Bad news for Ewers and the Longhorns as the star QB left the game in the second half in their 31-24 win over Houston after landing on his throwing shoulder. He finished 23 of 29 for 211 yards and two TDs.
Week: DP — Texas had a bye week.
Week 6: Texas' undefeated season came to an end in its Red River Rivalry game with Oklahoma, the Sooners winning, 34-30. From a completion percentage standpoint, Ewers was at his most efficent this year, going a sparkling 30-of-36. However, he did throw two interceptions — after having none through the first four games — lost a fumble and was sacked five times. Also, for the third straight week, Ewers was held to one TD pass on the afternoon. — JH
Week 5: Another productive day for the Texas signal-caller who threw for 325 yards as his unbeaten Longhorns cruised to 40-14 over No. 23 Kansas. The QB also rushed for two touchdoans and ran for 40 yards (on seven attempts) overall. Ewers did throw his first interception of 2023.
Week 4: Ewers completed 18-of-23 passes against Baylor for a robust 293 yards — his 12.7 YPA was by far his highest of the season — as Texas routed Baylor 38-6. The Longhorns QB also threw one TD pass — the first game this season in which he threw fewer than two TD passes in a game. The Baylor defense sacked Ewers three times. — JH
Week 3: Texas struggled early, then started making big plays in the second half, inlcuding an Ewers-to-Xavier Worth 44-yard touchdown. Ewers finished 11-of-21 for only 131 yards and two scores, but had at least three passes dropped.
Week 2: In the biggest win of his tenure as Texas' QB, Ewers threw another three touchdowns in leading the Longhorns to a monumental road win over Alabama, 34-24. Ewers played clean as well, not throwing an interception in a hostile road environment. Ewers' stats (24-of-38 for 348 yards) would have been even more impressive but for three drops by his receivers. This is the kind of performance that may scouts and NFL front offices to reconsider Ewers' position in the 2024 draft. — JH
Week 1: Ewers went 19-of-31 (61 percent) for 260 yards and threw three TDs in Texas' season opener, a 37-10 over visiting Rice. Ewers averaged 8.4 yards per attempt and looked sharp despite being sacked three times and pressured on a number of dropbacks. — JH
Week 0: DNP
—In the News—
As a five-star recruit, Quinn Ewers was widely viewed as the next great quarterback thanks to his big arm and ability to throw from all sorts of angles.
He skipped his senior year of high school to begin his career at Ohio State before transferring to Texas after his freshman season. While he hasn’t quite lived up to the hype yet, there is a chance that 2023 will be his year. According to On3‘s Jesse Simonton, Ewers is one of the five players in the Big 12 that have the best chance at winning the Heisman.
An award that a Longhorn hasn’t won since 1998 when legendary running back Ricky Williams hoisted the prestigious trophy, and also one that no Texas quarterback has ever won. Simonton explained that despite his struggles a year ago, Ewers’ path to the award is quite simple: beat Alabama.
Easily the Big 12’s most likely Heisman Trophy contender, Ewers was officially anointed QB1 for the Longhorns this spring after holding off Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning.
The former No. 1 overall recruit flashed his 5-star talent against Alabama and Oklahoma last season, but he also struggled with injuries and inconsistencies. But after a strong spring and surrounded by the best supporting cast of playmakers not at Ohio State, Ewers should have a monster sophomore season.
Beat Alabama in Week 2 or take Texas to the Big 12 Championship and Ewers will be among the favorites to win the award come the end of the year.
Ewers is likely more focused on taking a step forward in his development, but if he was in fact to beat Alabama and win the Heisman in the same year he could cement himself among Texas legends.
