Brian Barthelmes

OG · Virginia
One of the most versatile players in school history, he is one of only five Cavaliers to start at three different positions on the offensive line since 1986. In 2005, he was one of the team's three offensive linemen to start at least 35 games in a career. Not only is he versatile, but Barthelmes (pronounced barth-ull-mess) is also one of the more personable and colorful characters in college football. In April 2004, Barthelmes donated approximately 10 inches of his own hair to Lock of Loves, a non-profit organization that provides wigs made of donated hair to children who have suffered long-term hair loss due to illness. He had gone about 18 months without cutting his hair. At the hotel where the players were staying for the 2004 Music City Bowl, Barthelmes wore a red thong and mistletoe in the hotel lobby. Adorned with a slew of tattoos, Barthelmes has bottle cap-sized ear lob plugs. Even at Kenstow High School, Barthelmes was known for his versatility. He played offensive tackle, tight end and defensive end during his two-year career. He earned Western Reserve Conference All-South Division honors as a senior, adding honorable mention All-State accolades from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland News Herald in 2000. He was also named to the Western Reserve Conference All-Academic Team and named Geauga County Touchdown Club's Outstanding Student Athlete. Barthelmes registered 180 tackles, including five sacks, and recovered one fumble as a senior. He recorded 50 tackles, three sacks and recovered two fumbles as a junior. Barthelmes also had 59 career receptions as a tight end. He earned three letters as a post player on the basketball team, where he was a two-time selection to the Western Reserve All-Conference team and two-time Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland News Herald All-Star selection in basketball. Barthelmes was named to the Western Reserve and Greater Cleveland Basketball Coaches Association All-Star basketball teams and earned All-Tournament honors at the Aurora Invitational Basketball Tournament. He was an All-Ohio Academic Award recipient in 1999 and earned Student of the Month accolades in 1998. Barthelmes redshirted in 2001 after suiting up for the Richmond game at Virginia. He opened the 2002 season as a reserve left tackle, but shifted to left guard vs. Clemson, going on to start nine games. Assorted injuries limited Barthelmes to eleven games and eight starts in 2003, including seven starting assignments at left guard. Barthelmes started every game at left guard in 2004, helping the team lead the Atlantic Coast Conference in total offense (423.4 ypg), rushing (242.8 ypg), first downs (264) and fewest sacks allowed (16). He was also named to the Good Works Team by the American Football Coaches Association for community service. In 2005, Barthelmes shifted to center, starting ten games for the Cavaliers, but missed the Maryland and Boston College games with an ankle sprain. Overall, he finished his career with 38 starts -- 27 at left guard, 10 at center and one at right guard.

positives

Has a tall frame with room to add more bulk...Has a thick bubble with thick thighs and calves...Has adequate quickness to snap and reach the down block...Mauler type who is very active with his hands when engaging the defender...Has enough functional speed to get down the line of scrimmage and reach the block point...Sets with a wide base and flashes the strength to lock out and control...Has good work ethic and plays until the whistle...Has the short area burst and feel to get in front on pulls and traps.

negatives

Needs to improve his body structure, as he appears very soft, lacking muscle tone...Does not have the change of direction agility to recover...Best operating at the line of scrimmage, as he tends to fall off blocks when working in space...Needs to do a better job of gaining leverage, as he does not sustain blocks well in run support...Can get run over by a quick bull rush.

barthelmes has good size, but only adequate speed and marginal hand strength and athletic ability for the position. he has marginal explosion and drive off the ball, and struggles to keep his balance and body control on the move, as he will fall off blocks. he does show better ability to stay on his feet in pass protection and he has good lateral movement, but struggles to redirect and recover.

Barthelmes needs to do a better job with his hand usage and placement in attempts to control the defender, as he lacks a good punch on contact. He is a decent in-line blocker, showing better ability to sustain on the scope block and ability to seal, but struggles with the slant and quicker lineman. He does not have the ability to get to the second level and attack the linebackers off the double team, and is inconsistent with sustaining the block when on the move.

2004: Played most of the season with a right wrist fracture suffered in a mid-September practice. 2005: Takes Albutarul for asthma.
