Jake Rudock

A three-star quarterback recruit out of high school, Rudock received scholarship offers from Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado and Illinois, choosing the Hawkeyes - also a standout baseball player and might have been drafted if he didn't choose football. After redshirting in 2011 and not seeing any action in 2012, Rudock earned the starting job as a sophomore in 2013 and started all 13 games, posting 59.0% completions, 2,383 passing yards, 18 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. He started 12 games as a junior and improved his production in 2014 with 61.7% completions, 2,436 passing yards and a 16-to-5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. With the coaching staff favoring C.J. Beathard at quarterback for the 2015 season, Rudock looked to transfer as a graduate student, enrolling at Michigan for his final season of eligibility. He started all 13 games for the Wolverines as a senior, finishing with 64.0% completions, 3,017 passing yards, 20 passing scores and nine interceptions to earn All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors. Rudock accepted his invitation to the 2016 East-West Shrine Game.

A one-year starter at Michigan, Rudock was groomed by Jim Harbaugh in Michigan's pro-style offense, putting together a strong 2015 campaign to put him on the NFL radar - showed obvious improvement in the second half of his senior season once he gained confidence with the playbook, trusting his arm, mind and teammates. Rudock embraces the "game manager" label with his intelligence and focus on ball control, but his slow tempo from snap to throw and conservative decision-making often gets him in trouble.

Anticipates throws, delivering to spots and allowing his target to make play...composed to efficiently work through his reads, diagnosing the defense to find an available window...allows routes to develop and relies on touch...adequate height for the position...above average football smarts and works hard to perfect the playbook - mind is a steel trap...technically sound with smooth footwork in his drops, squaring his shoulders to deliver...operates well within the pocket, climbing with his eyes downfield...gutsy scrambler with the legs to buy extra half-seconds, throwing well on the move...mentally and physically tough... graduated with a degree in interdepartmental studies (May 2015)...lives in the film room with above average preparation habits...comfortable in a leadership role and genuinely loves his teammates - zero ego...adapted well to a new situation at Michigan and turned in one of the best passing seasons in school history, finishing with the second-most yards, completions and completion percentage in a single-season.

weaknesses

Average-at-best arm strength and his throws lack juice...lean-boned and doesn't possess ideal mass on his frame...hesitant downfield thrower with streaky ball placement - his ball tends to sail...careful decision-maker and too conservative, leading to gun shy tendencies...nice job within structure, but doesn't improvise well and once out of rhythm, he struggles to regain it...frenzied process when forced to speed up his movements, late to step up in the pocket...highly inconsistent internal clock and doesn't accurately sense pressure...bad habit of making up his mind where the ball is going pre-snap and forces throws...more of a lead-by-example individual, lacking a killer instinct.

a very grounded and coachable passer, rudock doesn't have elite arm strength, but could carve out a matt moore type of career in the nfl due to his touch, cerebral instincts and team-first mentality.
