Recent Kamryn Pettway Notes
Kamryn Pettway
in our view
While a productive runner for Gus Malzahn, Pettway's bullish frame is best suited for fullback in the NFL, though he will need to show greater durability to have a realistic shot at making a roster at any position.
strengths
Pettway is a mack truck of a runner boasting broad shoulders and fire hydrants for thighs who looks better suited to inside linebacker than running back. He is surprisingly quick to the hole and generates impressive speed for such a large back. He possesses enough lateral agility to side-step defenders at the point of attack and shows good vision to locate cutback lanes. Pettway can lower the boom when he plays with proper pad level, bulldozing through would-be tacklers with sheer will and leg drive. -- Rob Rang 1/11/2018
compares to
Greg Jones, Texans (retired) - Jones was a star running back at Florida State back in the early 2000s, rushing for 2,535 yards and 23 touchdowns for then-head coach Bobby Bowden and the Seminoles before the local Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the second round of the 2004 draft. Blocking for Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew (among others), Jones made the successful transition to fullback, emerging as one of the league's better human pile drivers - a role Pettway might have to commit to, as well.
weaknesses
While agile and fast for his size, Pettway possesses below average quickness and acceleration overall among NFL running backs, projecting best as a fullback, a position he has not played in the past. He saw little work as a receiver, catching just six passes over his career and looks unnatural securing the ball. He comes with obvious medical questions after missing significant time each of the past two seasons and may require character investigation, as well, after being suspended for the 2017 season opener for an undisclosed violation of team rules and staying home (despite medically being cleared to play) while the team traveled to the Peach Bowl to culminate what wound up being his final college season. - Rob Rang 1/11/2018
