Isaiah Wynn

OG, C · Georgia
... Star running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel generated most of the buzz for the SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs in 2017 - and for good reason - but their flashy senior campaigns were certainly enhanced by stellar blocking up front, with Wynn's wins at left tackle paving the way. Prior to 2017, Wynn had spent most of his 26 previous career starts inside at left guard. With left tackle Tyler Catalina graduating to the NFL, however, Kirby Smart and Georgia's coaching staff asked him to slide out to tackle for his senior campaign - a move that paid off beautifully for Wynn and Georgia's offense, as his nimble feet and aggression helped set the tone at the line of scrimmage allowing the Bulldogs to rush for an SEC-best (and ninth nationally) 258.4 yards per game while scoring 42 touchdowns, including a combined 31 from Michel (16) and Chubb (15). For his efforts, Wynn earned First Team All-SEC honors from league coaches and an invitation to the Senior Bowl - quite an accomplishment given the level of competition he faced on Georgia's run to the national championship game and the fact that it was his first season at left tackle, generally considered the most difficult position to play on the offensive line. in our view

Wynn played left tackle in high school and even practiced there at times at Georgia before making the switch outside as a senior, aiding in his transition. The fact that he so quickly and successfully handled the change in positions bodes well for his move back inside in the NFL, projecting as a future starting left guard and a Day Two value.

strengths

Plays like a cinder block on skates with a short, squatty frame, disproportionately long arms and light feet. Possesses very good initial quickness and often being the first off the ball in the running game. Shows good quickness, balance and body control for pulling, including the short area speed to get to the second level. Delivers a forceful pop on contact, generating a jolt with heavy hands into the chest plate of defenders and showing good upper body strength to lift and drive opponents back to create lanes. Good body control and balance in pass protection, easing out of his stance (at left tackle) and maintaining a tight arc with his eyes trained on the edge rusher. Shows passable foot speed, balance and arm length to handle blocking on the perimeter, shuffling well laterally to mirror and handle counters back to the inside. When he keeps his pad level down Wynn shows good balance to anchor, sitting down and locking out defenders. Good awareness of blitzes and stunts, showing the ability to pass off assignments mid-play. -- Rob Rang 1/11/2018

compares to

Xavier Su'a-Filo, Texans - After playing both left tackle and left guard at UCLA, Su'a-Filo won the Morris Trophy as the Pac-12's top offensive linemen and earned the No. 33 overall pick in 2014. Like Wynn, the 6-4, 310 pound Su'a-Filo has a frame best suited to the inside, earning starts in 31 of the past 32 games for the Texans at guard, attacking opponents with quickness and heavy hands.

weaknesses

Lacks the height and arm length most teams require at left tackle and will almost surely be asked to move back inside to guard. A bit top-heavy with relatively narrow hips and legs for a player with his broad core... Inconsistent knee bend and pad level, negating his own strength at times because he loses the leverage battle. Needs to do a better job of keeping his feet driving through contact, at times appearing satisfied with creating the initial hole (or pass set) but failing to finish blocks, leaving defenders in position to reach out an arm to impact the ball-carrier. Needs to show greater anticipation when blocking at the second level, getting to the point and appearing to be in position to make the hit but too often allowing defenders to slip by... - Rob Rang 1/11/2018
