Kelly Griffeth

TE · Fort Hays State
Positives...Has an outstanding frame for a tight end, but could add more bulk and convert to offensive tackle due to speed limitations as a receiver...Has strong lower body frame with a good bubble, thick thighs and calves and adequate upper body muscle tone...Not real sudden off the snap, but will ease off the line of scrimmage and uses his size and power to defeat the jam...Has the strength to power through the chuck and is very difficult to reroute...Used mainly on the tight end delay, shallow crosses, stop routes, hooks, curls and square-in patterns...Big target who is usually open on the tight end delay...Will turn it up and run with the ball, showing reliable hands and the toughness to compete for the ball in traffic...Looks the ball into his hands and shows the agility to adjust to off-target throws (see 2004 Western State game)...Will stiff arm defenders and power through tackles after the catch...Once he gains acceleration, he is a load to bring down in the open field...Blocks low and gets good leverage coming off the snap, showing the strength to drive defensive linemen...Good at turning and gaining position when blocking in-line...Upfield, he is also effective at getting position and sealing off the linebackers, showing good aggression through the play...Has the change of direction agility to adjust to the linebacker's moves. Negatives...Might have to move to offensive tackle, as he lacks ideal foot speed for the tight end position...Not real sudden in his get-off...While he is not held up much, it is more due to his size and strength than foot speed...Does not have the second gear to generate a burst to get past linebackers and safeties after the catch, relying more on power to break tackles...Has reliable hands, but will try to body catch, resulting in his cradling the ball improperly when working in a crowd...Has good change of direction agility, but lacks shake as a runner.
