positives
Wide-body type with a stout frame, wide hips and waist, big bubble, very thick legs, good arm reach and broad shoulders Has shown a recent improved effort to get into better shape, but must continue with that program Uses his reach and body mass effectively to wall off and sustain the defender Not really mobile or athletic when getting into the second level, but does have a quick burst off the snap on the short pull and traps (could be more effective performing at guard, as he works well in combination with other lineman than when isolated on the edge) Occupies space and does a good job of widening the rush lanes when he comes off the ball at a proper pad level Works hard to finish and when his pads stay down, he consistently plays with leverage More of a mauler, but has the hand strength to easily neutralize the bull rush Gets out of his stance with good power on the rise, doing a nice job of generating movement on his drive blocks Shows better explosion when working in-line (another reason that he might be a better fit at guard), as he can consistently stun and bury defenders when delivering pop on contact Uses his size and strength well to sustain and gain position and when he anchors properly, he is very difficult to get off his feet With his road grader style and powerful hands, he has developed into a very effective blocker for the ground game, using his frame well to widen and maintain the rush lanes (see 2005 Cisco College vs. Ranger College, Navarro College and NE Oklahoma A&M game films) Plays high and consumes defenders when on the move as a trap blocker Uses his hand punch and arm extension well to hold off the defender vs. over and inside alignment action.
compares to
VERNON CAREY-Miami While Turner lacks the pedigree from college that Carey possessed, he could round into a nice free agent find for some team. He has lacked a great training and nutritional program in the lower college ranks, but is an efficient drive blocker. He has good short area quickness for pulls and traps, making him a possible guard prospect, but does show limited foot speed when having to play in space or take on the quicker edge rushers. While he is more than not likely a supplemental draft pick, a team like the Rams could stash him on their developmental squad to give his body a chance to mature. Actually, I like him better as a pro prospect than I do Nebraska's Chris Patrick, as this kid plays with toughness and brute strength.
negatives
Strong player with an impressive frame, but lacks overall muscle definition, explosive quickness and stamina (needs to dedicate more hours in the training room in order to get into better shape) Must reduce the excess baggage around his waist (did drop over fifteen pounds prior to his Pro Day workout) in order to maintain better position and get lower in his pads More of a waist bender due to his excessive bulk and this causes him to lumber when having to move into space Has a very strong hand punch and good extension, but will sometimes get his hands outside of his frame, causing defenders to slip off his blocks (needs to keep his hands inside his frame better) Is quick to pick up stunts, but is slow-footed in his kick slide and can get his feet stuck or go out from under him when having to move out and mirror the edge rushers.
