Greg Scruggs

DT, DE · Louisville
The Louisville coaching staff didn't waste any time getting Scruggs on the field after recruiting him from St. Xavier in Cincinnati, which was the nation's top-ranked team and won a state championship in his only season on the team. Scruggs saw action in nine games as a true freshman before taking hold of the defensive interior for the Cardinals while starting all 12 games in 2009. He started just six of 12 games in 2010, however, finishing with 14 tackles, 5.5 for loss and a pair of sacks. Scruggs registered just 19 tackles in nine games as a senior, although six were for loss and he had a career-high four sacks. He was one of the anchors of Louisville's strong defense despite being bothered by a turf toe injury. His value in the NFL is as a rotational player who has experience at tackle and end; he added bulk at Louisville to play inside.

positives

Light-footed, long-armed defender with experience playing inside and out. Shows a quick first step off the snap and can split gaps because of it. Comes off the snap low and hard and can push the pocket. Flashes the lateral agility to avoid pass blockers and collapse the pocket. Provides good effort in pursuit laterally and downfield, though is not as fast as his timed speed would suggest. Only played one season of high school football... Showed his toughness in playing through injuries each of the past two seasons... Created some buzz for himself with a strong Pro Day effort that included a 4.77 second time in the 40-yard dash at 284 pounds... Hard-working player who was considered a team leader at Louisville... Possesses intriguing enough upside and the work ethic to consider with a late round selection as a developmental prospect.

negatives

A bit of a 'tweener. Doens't possess the speed off the egde that most teams are looking for as a 4-3 defensive end and hasn't demonstrated the upper body strength or use of leverage to handle inside duties in the four-man front or as a five technique defensive end in the 3-4. Flashes the traits to intrigue scouts but hasn't put it all together. Has struggled with injuries the past two seasons (sports hernia in 2010, foot injury in 2011)... Was arrested for a DUI in December of 2011 and wasn't allowed to participate in Louisville's bowl game.
