Ashley Griggs, mother of Ohio State football’s Carnell Tate, killed in drive-by shooting

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A woman shot and killed in an alleged drive-by shooting in Chicago was identified by a community activist as the mother of Ohio State football player Carnell Tate.
According to WGN, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Ashley Griggs as the woman shot and killed around 2:07 a.m. Sunday near Garfield Park on Chicago’s west side. A Chicago police spokesperson confirmed a 40-year-old woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Four other people were also shot and were transported to local hospitals. All were listed in fair condition. One of the victims told police the shooter fired from a vehicle.
WGN said Andrew Holmes, a Chicago community activist, identified Griggs as Tate’s mother. Tate attended Marist High School in Chicago before finishing his prep career at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Chicago police said Area 4 detectives were still investigating as of Sunday night. No one had been taken into custody.
Tate enrolled at OSU in January as one of the nation’s top incoming freshman receivers. He was a four-star prospect ranked No. 59 per the 247 Sports composite. He quickly emerged as one of the class’ top performers this past spring. He caught a 37-yard touchdown from Kyle McCord in the spring game.
On July 13, Griggs posted a link to her son’s No. 17 jersey in the OSU team store on Twitter, saying “The wait is finally over.”
Tate’s former 7 on 7 team, the South Florida Express, was among many who expressed sympathy for Tate and his family on social media. Another freshman receiver, Brandon Inniss, and Class of 2025 quarterback prospect Tavien St. Clair also posted their condolences on Twitter.
