Jimbo Fisher names Conner Weigman Texas A&M starting QB
3 hrs ago
Quarterback Conner Weigman has been named the starter for Texas A&M’s season opening bout against New Mexico Saturday, head coach Jimbo Fisher announced Monday.
In five games to close out the season last year, the sophomore completed 73 of 132 passes for 896 yards and eight touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. Weigman was a five-star prospect out of Bridgeland High School, ranked the No. 2 quarterback in the nation and the fifth overall player in the state of Texas in the 2022 class.
Weigman beat out redshirt sophomore and fourth-year quarterback Max Johnson, who earned the starting nod over Weigman last season after Haynes King went down with an injury. Johnson played in four games, completing 43 of 71 passes for 517 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson’s season was cut short due to a broken hand, paving the way for Weigman to earn the job.
Johnson transferred from LSU prior to last season, where he played in 18 games and tallied 3,884 yards and 35 touchdowns.
The Aggies kick off the season inside Kyle Field at 6 p.m. Saturday against New Mexico.
