New Nebraska tight end coach Josh Martin is full-go in on-field role
Omaha World-Herald 5 hrs ago
An abrupt change at tight ends coach last week has led to a smooth transition early in training camp for Nebraska.
The Huskers began on-field workouts Monday with a new on-field assistant in Josh Martin, who replaced Bob Wager after the former coach resigned last Friday following multiple citations including for a DUI last week.
Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield said he’s been “really pleased” with the 35-year-old. Martin’s experience working with tight ends previously at Arizona State and SMU has been evident. Satterfield had planned to join receivers coach Garret McGuire in helping the tight ends with the pass game while offensive line coach Donovan Raiola had anticipated working some with the group on the running attack.
Martin — an offseason Matt Rhule hire as a special teams analyst — hasn’t needed the extra help.
“He hit the ground running on Friday — he learned everything in install one and install two and has one or two questions a day, but those guys know what to do, how to line up,” Satterfield said. “They’re playing at a high level, they’re playing with confidence and I think he’s done a really nice job.”
Tight end Nate Boerkircher said the emphasis Thursday was footwork — a little thing that leads to big blocks. What used to be an occasional hallway hello with Martin has quickly become a much deeper relationship. The coach has brought a steady dose of knowledge and energy in the early going.
“One of the first things he said was he stayed ready, so he didn’t have to get ready,” Boerkircher said. “He’s a tight end coach at heart, and he just really wants the best for us."
