Will Florida football wide receivers provide consistency in 2023? We break it down.
Florida football is seeking more consistency from its receivers entering the 2023 season.
Drops and injuries plagued the Gators during the 2022 season, resulting in a passing game that was unable get fully in sync. Starting receivers Justin Shorter and Xzavier Henderson missed time in November with injuries, forcing younger players to step into increased roles in SEC play.
Shorter and Henderson both left the program in the offseason, with Henderson transferring to Cincinnati and Shorter declaring for the NFL Draft, where he was picked in the fifth round by the Buffalo Bills.

Receivers coach Keary Colbert also left, taking a job in the NFL with the Denver Broncos. Florida turned to a familiar face to replace Colbert, Billy Gonzales, who has prior stints as receivers coach with the Gators from 2005-09 and 2018-21. Gonzales began working with UF's receivers this spring.
“There’s length, there’s quickness, there’s size," Gonzales said. "I’m fired up to have the opportunity to coach them. Everybody’s a little different, everybody’s a little unique in what they bring but as far as them learning, they’ve done a great job here.”
Here's a look at Florida's receivers going into the 2023 season:
Florida football wide receivers — the starters
Slot receiver Ricky Pearsall is back after leading the Gators in receiving yards (661) and touchdowns (5) last season. Pearsall made 33 receptions, averaging more than 20 yards per catch.
"I trust Coach Napier to put me in the right spots," Pearsall said. "When those opportunities come, execute.”
Sophomore Caleb Douglas is coming off a strong spring and is expected to be one of the starters on the outside. Douglas had 10 catches for 175 yards and 2 TDs as a true freshman last season, including a career-long 62 yard touchdown catch against Eastern Washington.
The third receiver spot could come down to competition between redshirt sophomore Kahleil Jackson and redshirt sophomore Marcus Burke, who both caught touchdown passes in UF's spring game.
The depth
Ja'Quavion Fraziars, a junior from Dunnellon, and sophomore Thai Chiaokhiao-Bowman bring back experience and pass-catching ability.
Fraziars had 5 catches for 60 yards and a TD last season, while Bowman finished the year with 7 catches for 138 yards.
The future
Three freshman — Andy Jean, Aidan Mizell and Eugene Wilson — all could make an impact depending on how they develop over the season.
Jean and Mizell both enrolled early and took part in spring drills. Jean displayed speed and pass-catching ability and finished the spring game with 2 catches for 28 yards, including 14 yards after the catch. Mizell is another speed threat capable of getting behind coverage.
Wilson, a borderline four/five-star recruit, didn't enroll until the summer but has already impressed in the slot in workouts and will have a mentor in Pearsall to guide him throughout fall camp.
