Nebraska football's big recruiting weekend could get a jolt before it even begins

Two photos, one future Husker and all the potential pass-catching Huskers a quarterback could want. These days, the tone for Nebraska football recruiting weekends is often set by social media. And Bellevue West quarterback Danny Kaelin is on the case, putting Husker fans on alert for potential good news. First, on Wednesday night, the 2024 Nebraska QB commit posted a picture of himself and Ainsworth tight end Carter Nelson hanging out at the College World Series. On Thursday afternoon, Kaelin threw at the NebPreps SE7EN 7-on-7 tournament and had his arms around teammates Isaiah McMorris and Dae’vonn Hall when Bellevue West quarterbacks coach Brett Newcomb snapped a pic. “My guys,” Kaelin wrote on Twitter. Future QB1 and future TE1. Go get him DK! 👀🌽 @DanielKaelin5 @Carter83854638 #GBR pic.twitter.com/KJH6Si8dyr — Zach Kremlacek (@kremlacek_zach) June 21, 2023 All four of them visit NU this weekend. It’s a high-powered pass-and-catch quartet that would reset the Huskers’ offense for years to come. And it’s possible McMorris and Hall could jump in Nebraska’s boat before they head down to campus. The duo — who combined for 152 catches, 2,271 yards and 25 touchdowns last season — planned a joint Instagram announcement at 10:30 a.m. Friday. It’s possible — even likely — the two four-star prospects will commit to Nebraska and give coach Matt Rhule T-Bird triplets in his second recruiting class. While NU had moved on from Hall in June after the player visited Tennessee, talks restarted in the last week between the school and the 6-foot-2, 180-pounder. As for the 6-foot, 185-pound McMorris, he went through a rigorous hourslong camp with NU receivers coach Garret McGuire on June 10 that seemed to solidify his interest in Nebraska. “They tell me they need me, and, with my skill set what it is, I could be all around the field, not just one position,” McMorris said June 6. “I could come out of the backfield, play running back. Just a do-it-all receiver. They really want me to be a Husker.” Nelson, a national recruit who has taken official visits to Georgia, Notre Dame and Penn State, will be tougher to land. The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder is a top 100 prospect according to On3 and 247 Sports, and is such a complete athlete he threw for 663 yards, rushed for 761 and caught 28 passes worth 525 yards last season, accounting for 40 total touchdowns. College coaches flew private aircraft into Ainsworth just to get a glimpse. “If he’s made up his mind after Nebraska, we won’t take any more visits,” Jake Nelson, Carter’s father, said on June 7. “If he’s still not 100%, sure then we would look at taking some others later down the road.” Several other top prospects in the 500-mile radius will be headed to NU, too: * Logan-Magnolia (Iowa) High School offensive tackle Grant Brix, who has officially visited Oklahoma, Kansas State and Alabama in June and will again see NU this weekend. The 6-foot-6, 275-pounder is a top-100 prospect according to On3 and 247 Sports Composite, and has a sweet tooth for power football. “We pass maybe five times a game,” Brix said in March. “It’s small-town Iowa football, the run game. It’s 34 Gut, 23 Belly, stuff like that.” * Bozeman (Montana) Gallatin receiver Quinn Clark camped at Nebraska and got his first FBS offer; previously, he was expected to choose between Montana and Montana State. The son of the late Ken Clark, an All-Big Eight running back for the Huskers in the late ’80s, the 6-foot-6, 190-pound Clark could be a quick commit during or after his official visit. * Littleton (Colorado) Heritage defensive back Rex Guthrie is, like several of NU’s 2024 secondary commits, a prospect with exactly one Power Five scholarship offer. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound safety received it at Nebraska’s June 16 Friday Night Lights camp. The Huskers’ class is pretty crowded with Roger Gradney, Braylen Prude, Callen Barta, Evan Taylor and Donovan Jones already aboard, but Nebraska plans to regularly start five defensive backs, as well. * Omaha Westside defensive back Caleb Benning won’t be visiting on Friday or Saturday, but he’ll likely be in Sunday just before the recruiting dead period. The 6-foot, 185-pounder is high on Nebraska’s list after a strong sophomore season and a strong finish to his junior season after battling injuries.
