Coastal will open the 2023 season at UCLA on Sept. 2

DALLAS – Coastal Carolina super senior defensive lineman Kennedy Roberts was named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Outland Trophy, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced on Tuesday. The Outland Trophy is awarded to the best college football interior lineman in the United States as voted on by the FWAA.
Roberts was one of 91 returning standout interior linemen named to the watch list, representing all 10 NCAA Division I FBS conferences and independents.
Also named to the 2023 Phil Steele Preseason All-Sun Belt second team, Roberts lined up along the defensive line in all 13 games last season, totaling 26 tackles overall. He had 6.0 tackles-for-loss, including 2.5 sacks, and added a pass breakup and recovered two fumbles.
One of the most experienced returners for the Chants this season, Roberts has played in 47 games over his four years at Coastal, totaling 55 tackles, 7.0 tackles-for-loss, and 3.0 sacks. He also has recorded one pass breakup, two fumble recoveries, and blocked a kick.
The fifth-year Chant had a season-high five tackles in the home win over Army (Sept. 3) and recorded a season-best 2.0 tackles-for-loss in the home win over Appalachian State (Nov. 3) and in the 2023 Sun Belt Championship game at Troy (Dec. 3).
Coastal will open the season versus UCLA at the famous Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 10:30 p.m. ET. CCU's home opener will be versus Jacksonville State on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. ET.
