Eight Roadrunners land on Shrine Bowl 1,000 list

TAMPA, Fla. — Eight members of the UTSA football program have been named to the Shrine Bowl 1,000 list, the East-West Shrine Bowl announced Monday.
Roadrunners selected for the list include tight end Oscar Cardenas, wide receivers Joshua Cephus and De'Corian Clark, defensive lineman Joe Evans, cornerback Nicktroy Fortune, quarterback Frank Harris, inside linebacker Jamal Ligon and safety Rashad Wisdom.
The annual Shrine Bowl 1,000 list includes the top eligible collegiate stars for the upcoming game. The 99th annual East-West Shrine Bowl, the nation's oldest college football all-star game, will take place Feb. 1, 2024, in Frisco, Texas. The game will be televised nationally on NFL Network from Ford Center at The Star, the worldwide headquarters and training facility for the Dallas Cowboys.
"The Shrine Bowl 1,000 serves as the first look at who may be at the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl," said Eric Galko, Director of Football Operations and Player Personnel for the Shrine Bowl. "Our staff combed through all four levels of college football, evaluating thousands of Shrine Bowl-eligible players, to find the top players in the country. We're excited to recognize these players for their accomplishments so far, and make sure that fans, media and NFL clubs know that these players are among the best in the nation."
Each year, hundreds of the top collegiate stars are either taken in the NFL Draft or sign as free agents, and the East-West Shrine Bowl provides these NFL hopefuls with an excellent opportunity to showcase their skills while supporting the life-changing mission of Shriners Children's.
The Roadrunners will kick off their 13th season of play and first as a member of the American Athletic Conference on Saturday, Sept. 2, when they travel to Houston to face the Cougars at 6 p.m. at TDECU Stadium.
UTSA will face Texas State for the home opener at 2:30 p.m. the following Saturday at the Alamodome. The Roadrunners will host Army at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15, UAB on Oct. 14, East Carolina on Oct. 28, Rice on Nov. 11 and South Florida at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17.

Under the direction of two-time conference coach of the year Jeff Traylor, the Roadrunners are coming off an 11-3 campaign that saw them capture their second straight league crown and play in a bowl game for the third year in a row. UTSA has been ranked in the top 25 in each of the last two seasons and boasts a combined 23 wins over that span, the fourth-best total among all FBS teams behind only Georgia (29), Michigan (25) and Alabama (24).
