By Matt Vautour
Liam Coen, former UMass star quarterback and current Kentucky offensive coordinator was hospitalized on Sunday after a “medical episode” while working at the team’s facility following the team’s win over Eastern Kentucky Saturday.
The Kentucky Athletic Department tweeted a statement:
“On Sept. 10, 2023, at approximately 12:40 p.m., assistant football coach Liam Coen had a medical episode while at work at UK’s football offices on campus. He is currently in good condition at UK Chandler Hospital, while doctors and medical personnel continue to monitor him, and is expected to be released Monday. Out of respect for his privacy and that of his family, we will have no additional comment at this time.”
No other details or specifics were provided.
After leaving UMass as the owner of most of the school’s career passing records, Coen was hired as the quarterbacks coach at Brown (2010, 2012-13) and Rhode Island (2011). He spent two years with Mark Whipple at UMass (2014-15). He spent two years in Orono as Maine’s offensive coordinator before joining Sean McVay’s staff for three seasons as an assistant wide receivers and quarterbacks coach for the Rams (2018-20).
He was hired as the offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach at Kentucky in 2021. He went back to the Rams as the offensive coordinator in 2022 but returned to the Wildcats this season in the same role he held before.
