4-star WR Jordan Shipp, teammate of Wolverines QB commit, chooses UNC over Michigan

Michigan 2024 four-star quarterback commit Jadyn Davis has one of his top receiving targets set to join him in Ann Arbor.
Another, however, will be playing college football elsewhere. Four-star receiver Jordan Shipp, a top Wolverines target, chose North Carolina over other finalists Michigan and N.C. State during his commitment announcement on Sunday night.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder, who is ranked as the No. 64 wideout and No. 425 overall prospect nationally, per the 247Sports Composite index, took official visits to all three schools last month.
“At one time, Michigan was on top,” Shipp told On3. “I got the offer and after I went up there for a visit, Michigan was on top. It blew me away and they took the lead. I went back to Chapel Hill again though after that, and there was just a different feeling for me there.
“That’s really what it came down to. I can’t explain it, that feeling in Chapel Hill felt like home.”
Over the couple of months, many recruiting experts predicted Shipp to land at Michigan, but 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions came pouring in on Saturday in favor of the Tar Heels.
Shipp led Providence Day, which won a state title last season, with 1,088 receiving yards last season on 62 catches. He proved to be a viable target for Davis and formed a dynamic receiving duo with Channing Goodwin, a 2024 three-star prospect who committed to the Wolverines on May 7.
“Good-sized outside receiver who’s somewhat of a polished technician considering he’s entering his senior year of high school,” 247Sports scouting analyst Gabe Brooks wrote in his scouting report.
“Excellent short-to-intermediate target who knows how to leverage defenders into breaks and will work the middle of the field with disregard for his own safety. Consistent hands catcher with high-pointing acumen in timing and physical ability. Minds the boundaries at all times and frequently gets a toe down when difficult to do so. Creates space with his body in various situations, whether fomenting separation on comebacks or boxing out for red-zone shots. For the same reasons, presents a dangerous back-shoulder target. Sneaky good after the catch with slippery strength and some tackle-breaking ability.”
So what does this mean for Michigan? It currently has two receiver commits this cycle with Goodwin and four-star I’Marion Stewart but has room for more, even with 26 prospects already verbally pledged in the class. Jim Harbaugh’s program is still in the running with Burley (Idaho) top-50 recruit Gatlin Bair, but he is planning on taking a two-year mission following high school and won’t enroll in college until the 2026 season.
St. Louis (Missouri) University five-star Ryan Wingo also is a top target for the Wolverines, but they currently aren’t viewed as the leader to land him.
After 2023, Michigan will lose receiver Cornelius Johnson and likely Roman Wilson. They are the only two receivers on the roster with more than 10 career catches, so the position certainly is a big need this recruiting cycle.
