CFB notebook: Arizona set to hire Sumlin

Arizona hired Kevin Sumlin as its head football coach, the school announced Sunday evening. Terms of the new contract will be made available at a Tuesday news conference in Tucson to introduce Sumlin. "We're excited to announce we have selected Kevin Sumlin (@CoachSumlin) to lead @ArizonaFBall into the future. #BearDown," the Arizona athletic department tweeted. Sumlin, 53, was 51-26 in six seasons at Texas A&M. He was 36-17 in four seasons at Houston, including a 13-1 record in 2011, before taking the job at Texas A&M. Texas A&M fired Sumlin after the 2017 season, when the Aggies finished the regular season 7-5. He was replaced by former Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher. Sumlin replaces Rich Rodriguez at Arizona. Rodriguez was fired Jan. 2 after a sexual harassment allegation the university began investigating in October and a recent notice of a hostile-workplace lawsuit to be filed against him. Rodriguez went 43-35 in six seasons at Arizona. --Washington running back Myles Gaskin announced Sunday that he will stay in school for his senior season and forgo the 2018 NFL Draft. The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Monday. He was considered to be a mid-round pick. "I'm comin back. #GoDawgz," Gaskin tweeted. The 5-foot-8, 192-pound Gaskin has rushed for more than 4,000 yards in his career. -- Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo, who was mulling an offer to become Arizona's head football coach, has decided to stay with the Midshipmen. The news was first reported by Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports on Sunday morning. Niumatalolo later said in a statement, via the Capital Gazette: "After much prayer and pondering it has become crystal clear that USNA is a special place with special people and I love it here. Plus, I have unfinished business!" Niumatalolo, 52, has won 63.6 percent of his games (84-48) in a 10-year run with the Midshipmen. Navy went 7-6 this season, including a 49-7 victory over Virginia in the Military Bowl. -- Utah State co-defensive coordinator Kendrick Shaver is headed to Washington State to join the coaching staff in a yet-to-be-defined role, The Seattle Times reported. Earlier this month, Washington State lost defensive coordinator Alex Grinch to Ohio State and subsequently hired former Minnesota head coach Tracy Claeys to take Grinch's position. Shaver will take the spot on the staff left by outside linebackers coach Roy Manning after he left to become special teams coordinator for new UCLA head coach Chip Kelly. Shaver was at Utah State for six seasons. The 2017 season was Shaver's second as co-defensive coordinator and his first as outside linebackers coach at Utah State.
