CFB notebook: Former Ohio State lineman Stillwagon dies
One of the best linemen to wear an Ohio State uniform has died. Jim Stillwagon, the first player in college football history to win both the Outland Trophy and the Lombardi Trophy in the same season, died at age 68, a week short of turning 69. He was the first Lombardi Trophy winner and a two-time All-American in 1969 and 1970. Stillwagon was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991. Woody Hayes recruited Stillwagon and was one of three "super sophs" to lead the Buckeyes to the national championship in 1968. The other two "super sophs" were quarterback Rex Kern and former Oakland Raiders defensive back Jack Tatum. The Green Bay Packers drafted Stillwagon in the fifth round in 1971, but he never played in the NFL. Instead, he opted to play in the CFL from 1971 through 1975. Official cause of death was not released, but the Columbus Dispatch cited heart issues. --Alabama offensive analyst William Vlachos is headed to the Buffalo Bills to fill the same position. Vlachos was a Rimington Award finalist as an All-America center for Nick Saban and Alabama in 2011 and a four-time national champion as a player and a coach in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He was an offensive analyst for Saban since joining the Alabama staff in 2013. He is following former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to Buffalo. --Hawaii quarterback Dru Brown announced on social media that he is heading to Oklahoma State for his final season. "Grateful for the opportunity to play for Oklahoma State University in my final season #HumbleBeginnings #GoPokes," Brown posted Saturday on Twitter. Brown passed for 2,785 yards and 18 touchdowns last season with the Rainbow Warriors. The 6-foot, 200-pound graduate transfer will have a chance to secure the starting job with Oklahoma State, which saw record-setting quarterback Mason Rudolph under center for four years. Brown will compete with former walk-on Taylor Cornelius, sophomore Keondre Wudtee and incoming freshman Spencer Sanders.
