CFB notebook: Iowa OL Wirfs arrested on OMVI charge
Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs (74) celebrates a touchdown with teammates last season.
Iowa sophomore offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs, who started eight games as a true freshman, was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
He is the second Hawkeye to be arrested in a little over a week on alcohol-related charges. On July 21, defensive tackle Brady Reiff was booked on a public intoxication charge. Reiff has been suspended for the season opener on Sept. 1 against Northern Illinois.
Wirfs was stopped around 1:45 a.m. in Iowa City, according to police reports. He was booked into the Johnson County Jail and was released Sunday morning.
"While we are currently gathering additional facts, I am disappointed in Tristan's decision-making based on the information that's already been confirmed," Iowa athletics director Gary Barta said in a statement released by the university. "He is subject to the rules and regulations of the UI Student Athlete Code of Conduct, and the rules and regulations of coach Kirk Ferentz and his program."
-- Seven years ago, the military opened its doors to gays, lesbians and bisexuals when "Don't ask, don't tell" was repealed. On Friday, Air Force sophomore defensive back Bradley Kim made history when he became the first active football player in the Air Force, Army or Navy to come out publicly as gay.
Before making the announcement on Instagram, Kim had already come out to his parents as well as many teammates and coach Troy Calhoun.
The Academy responded to questions from the Colorado Springs Gazette with a statement saying, "The academy strives to foster a culture where everyone gives and receives dignity and respect so that each individual has the opportunity to fulfill their potential."
Kim missed last season after he suffered a shoulder injury in basic training.
-- Two former Tennessee players were acquitted of rape charges Friday night by a Knox County jury in a high-profile case in Knoxville, Tenn.
Former Volunteers linebacker A.J. Johnson, 26, and teammate Michael Williams, 25, were accused of raping a female Tennessee athlete during a party after a football victory in November 2014. A jury of seven women and five men took less than 90 minutes to find the two not guilty on all charges.
Neither Johnson nor Williams played again for the Volunteers after the incident.
Johnson was a four-year starter for the Vols who amassed 425 career tackles. He had invitation to the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine revoked after his indictment. He hopes to revive his football career after being cleared.
