CFB notebook: Marshall player dies from complications of shooting
Chris Weinke was named Tennessee's running backs coach.
Marshall defensive tackle Larry Aaron III died Thursday due to complications from a shooting that left him paralyzed. He was 19.
Aaron passed away at a hospital in Frederick, Md. He was struck in the back by a stray bullet at a New Year's Eve party that left him with no feeling in his legs.
Immediately after the shooting in Severn, Md., Aaron's injuries were not considered life-threatening. His condition deteriorated this week, according to the Charleston Gazette-Mail.
The 6-foot-5, 272-pound Aaron had 13 tackles in eight games during the 2017 season. His last game was in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 16, when he made one tackle in Marshall's 31-28 win over Colorado State.
--Alabama officially announced several changes in its coaching staff. Dan Enos, who was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arkansas for the past three seasons and was hired as an offensive assistant at Michigan a month ago, will be the Crimson Tide's quarterbacks coach and will also have the title of associate head coach.
Craig Kuligowski, the defensive line coach and assistant head coach at Miami the past two years, will serve as Alabama's defensive line coach and will also be an associate head coach.
The school also confirmed that Mike Locksley, Alabama's wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator last year, has been promoted to offensive coordinator, and Tosh Lupoi, the Tide's outside linebackers coach this past season, has been promoted to defensive coordinator.
Locksley replaces Brian Daboll, who left after one season with Alabama to become offensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills, and Lupoi steps in for Jeremy Pruitt, who departed to become Tennessee's head coach.
--Former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Chris Weinke has been hired to coach Tennessee's running backs, the school announced.
Volunteers head coach Jeremy Pruitt and Weinke worked together last season at Alabama and were a part of the Crimson Tide's 2017 national championship staff. Prior to his stint at Alabama, Weinke was the quarterbacks coach for the NFL's then-St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
--Rutgers hired Noah Joseph as its co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach and Cory Robinson as its cornerbacks coach and pass coordinator, the school announced.
Joseph, who spent the past five seasons at Indiana, replaces co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Bill Busch. Busch left the program earlier this month to take a similar position at LSU.
Robinson spent last season coaching cornerbacks at Temple.
--Joey Jones, who resigned as South Alabama's head coach in November, will join Joe Moorhead's coaching staff at Mississippi State as the Bulldogs' special teams coach, multiple media outlets reported.
Jones replaces Scott Fountain, who returned to Georgia earlier this month after less than one month with Mississippi State.
Jones, 55, was 52-50 at South Alabama, including an upset of Mississippi State in the 2016 opener.
