CFB Notebook: Michigan QB Patterson reportedly signs with Rangers

Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson, who transferred in from Mississippi a few months ago, signed a contract to play baseball for the Texas Rangers, according to the Dallas Morning News. Patterson, a junior, was a 39th-round draft pick (1,169th overall) in the 2018 major league draft. He last played baseball during his junior year at Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport, La. The Rangers listed Patterson as a third baseman. The deal with the Rangers reportedly is for six years and allows Patterson to work with the Rangers' instructional staff when he has off time from football at Michigan. Patterson's father, Sean, said after the draft his son is fully focused on playing football at Michigan. "He's just happy and humbled he was drafted at this point," Sean Patterson said. Patterson is competing with sophomore Brandon Peters, redshirt freshman Dylan McCaffrey and true freshman Joe Milton for the starting quarterback job with the Wolverines. Michigan was made aware of Patterson's decision to sign and head coach Jim Harbaugh reportedly supported the move. --Ohio State freshman safety Marcus Hooker was charged with DUI in Neshannock Township, Pa. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday. The 18-year-old Hooker, younger brother of Indianapolis safety Malik Hooker, was stopped by police on June 16. He was also charged with having a high rate of alcohol in his system, purchase of alcohol by a minor, disregard of a traffic lane, careless driving and failure to have rear lights. Court records showed that Hooker, who committed to Ohio State last year and enrolled in June, had a blood alcohol content between .10 and .16. --Five-star offensive tackle Devontae Dobbs of Belleville (Mich.) High School has committed to Michigan State. The 6-foot-4, 304-pound Dobbs, ranked as the No. 13 overall recruit and No. 3 offensive tackle according to 247Sports' Composite 2019 class rankings, made his commitment via Twitter. "I am blessed and extremely excited to announced that I will be continuing my academic and football career at Michigan State," Dobbs wrote. "All Glory to God! I want to thank my family and coaches for supporting me all these years and ask for you continued support. I have a very strong village and I love them. Also, I want to thank all the coaches that have recruited me and have given me an opportunity to play at their prestigious University." Dobbs is the Spartans' highest-ranked recruit in the 2019 class, and their second top-100 commit. His commitment gives the Spartans the 25th-ranked recruiting class in the country and the seventh-best in the Big Ten.
