CFB notebook: Missouri QB Lock apologizes for junior high tweets
Missouri quarterback Drew Lock has had to apologize for insensitive tweets in eighth grade.
Missouri quarterback and 2018 Heisman contender Drew Lock is the latest athlete apologizing for tweeting offensive remarks.
The Columbia Daily Tribune received an anonymous tip and the paper discovered the tweets sent by Lock when he was 14 years old in 2011. The tweets have since been deleted, but one was directed at the gay and African-American communities.
"I was recently made aware of five tweets from my eighth grade year in middle school that were perceived as insensitive and inappropriate," Lock told the Columbia Daily Tribune in a statement. "An anonymous person brought these to the attention of the Columbia Daily Tribune, and I appreciate having the opportunity to address them. I didn't intend to offend anyone with those messages, but I understand that this is an example of how words, even when written by a young teenager, can be interpreted by others as newsworthy, harmful and inappropriate."
Most recently, major league baseball players Trea Turner, Josh Hader and Sean Newcomb have come under fire for offense tweets when they were young. Days before the NFL Draft, Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen, selected with the seventh pick, came under fire for sending insensitive tweets while in high school.
-- Maybe it's wishful thinking by Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley when he said quarterback and major league draftee Kyler Murray could return after the 2018 season, but Murray's agent, Scott Boras, put to bed any notion of Murray playing football behind this season.
"Kyler's baseball career has a very defined path, which includes playing football at OU for only the 2018 season," Boras told The Athletic.
Murray was taken with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 Major League Baseball draft. He signed a deal with Oakland that includes a $4.66 million bonus. The NCAA allows Murray to sign a baseball contract and still play football if he meets certain academic standards.
Murray played in seven games for the Sooners last year, completing 18 of 21 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns without an interception as the backup to Mayfield, the Heisman Trophy and No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
-- Florida State is moving a handful of its practices away from Tallahassee and heading across the state to Bradenton from Aug. 12 through Aug. 16.
The school announced via a statement that practices will be held at IMG Academy, where coincidentally, the Seminoles are recruiting a number of players.
Fans will be mostly kept in the dark because the NCAA prohibits the school from publicizing off-campus practices. Practices also will be closed to the media and public, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.
The newspaper also said two IMG stars, four-star offensive guard Dontae Lucas and four-star defensive end Jaleel McRae, have committed to Willie Taggart and that Seminoles will be practicing in front of a handful of other highly sought recruits.
