CFB notebook: Ohio State sets 14-day timeline for Meyer probe
Jeff Hamms leads a rally in support of Ohio State Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer.
Ohio State officials released a statement late Sunday saying that the investigation into coach Urban Meyer would be completed in 14 days.
The investigation is focusing on what Meyer knew regarding the history of alleged domestic violence by former assistant coach Zach Smith, who was fired last month. Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave last week as the university put together an investigative team that will look into whether Meyer was aware of Smith's past -- both in 2009 and again in 2015 following an incident with Smith's now ex-wife Courtney Smith.
The school's statement issued Sunday said former Ohio House Speaker Jo Ann Davidson will serve as chair of the working group. That working group will direct the work of the investigative team and will assist with communication to the full board on the matter.
The investigation itself will be led by former Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Mary Jo White.
The last line of the statement read, "The investigation is expected to be completed within 14 days." It is unclear whether any action will be taken at that time.
--Thirteen North Carolina players will be suspended for at least one game for their involvement in selling team-issued shoes. The action comes after the school self-reported secondary violations to the NCAA.
Quarterback Chazz Surratt, who started seven games for North Carolina, is one of the players suspended.
Nine of the players were suspended for four games, and that group includes Surratt, offensive lineman Brian Anderson, defensive end Malik Carney, wide receiver Beau Corrales, defensive end Tomon Fox, defensive end Tyrone Hopper, offensive lineman Quiron Johnson, linebacker Malik Robinson and offensive lineman Jordan Tucker.
Defensive backs Greg Ross and Tre Shaw must sit out two games, and quarterback Jack Davidson and offensive lineman Jonah Melton will serve a one-game suspension.
The NCAA will allow North Carolina to stagger the suspensions so they all won't be suspended for the same games.
--Michigan State starting defensive back Josiah Scott is likely to be sidelined for the next two months because of an undisclosed injury, head coach Mark Dantonio said.
Josiah Scott is a sophomore who started 12 games last season and was named a freshman All-American.
Scott recorded two interceptions, 10 passes defensed and 30 tackles last season as a freshman.
