CFB notebook: QB Nedral eligible for Nebraska
Nebraska quarterback Noah Vedral was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA on Friday. Vedral, a transfer from Central Florida, was in uniform for Saturday's game at Northwestern, the Omaha-World-Herald reported. A school spokesman confirmed to the newspaper that the NCAA granted the waiver request for Vedral, who had been expected to sit out this season, per transfer rules. However, when Cornhuskers quarterback Tristan Gebbia announced just before the season that he planned to transfer, the school stepped up its efforts to gain Vedral's eligibility. Vedral was a backup under coach Scott Frost at Central Florida last season but opted to transfer after Frost was hired by Nebraska in the offseason. The Cornhuskers had three quarterbacks on the roster -- Adrian Martinez, Andrew Bunch and Matt Masker. Vedral took Masker's place on the travel roster for Saturday's game. A Nebraska native, Vedral played in eight games as a true freshman in the 2017 season, completing 22 of 29 passes for 276 yards and one touchdown as the backup to McKenzie Milton. Vedral also ran for 77 yards and two touchdowns. -- Texas sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger sustained an injury to his throwing shoulder during Saturday's game against Baylor. Ehlinger, who has completed 65.3 percent of his passes with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions this season, was forced to leave the game early in the first quarter because he was bleeding. He jogged to the locker room and returned to the sideline in the second quarter with what appeared to be a bandage on his left hand but the school said it was a shoulder injury. Ehlinger was 4 of 5 for 35 yards passing and rushed twice for five yards Saturday before giving way to junior Shane Buechele. Ehlinger threw for 314 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 72 yards and three scores in the No. 9 Longhorns' 48-45 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma last week. He has six rushing TDs this year and hasn't thrown an interception since getting picked twice in a season-opening 34-29 loss at Maryland. -- Iowa starting running back Ivory Kelly-Martin was ruled out of Saturday's game at Indiana. Kelly-Martin did not pass the concussion protocol after he was injured in the Hawkeyes' 48-31 win at Minnesota last weekend, according to the Des Moines Register. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Kelly-Martin is third on the team with 181 yards rushing through three games. Kelly-Martin rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries in a season-opening win over Northern Illinois. Injuries caused him to miss the next two games against Iowa State and Northern Iowa. He returned to the lineup against Wisconsin on Sept. 22 and had 72 yards on 14 carries in a 28-17 loss to the Badgers.
