See which Utah Utes football coaches got raises this year
By Alex Vejar The Utah Utes football team had itself another stellar season in 2022. Undefeated at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Another Pac-12 championship. Another trip to the Rose Bowl. And for that, several on the Utes coaching staff were rewarded with raises and contract extensions that went into effect earlier this year. Below is a breakdown of the current contract situations of each coach on Utah’s staff, according to documents obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune via public records request. Kyle Whittingham Utah’s head coach got a scheduled raise starting in the new year that makes his 2023 salary $4.7 million. His current deal started in 2022 and features increasing annual raises through the 2027 season. Morgan Scalley The team’s defensive coordinator received a raise on Feb. 2 that will bring his salary to $1.5 million, which is up from $1.4 million. Scalley’s contract is a three-year rolling horizon agreement. That means that his deal is automatically renewed every Feb. 1 and is good for three years thereafter. Andy Ludwig The terms of Ludwig’s contract changed on Feb. 14 — around the time the Utes’ offensive coordinator was being courted by Notre Dame. What was once a three-year rolling horizon agreement turned into a more common contract that goes from Feb. 1 of this year to Jan. 31, 2025. Furthermore, if no extension is agreed upon by the university and the Utes offensive coordinator, his deal turns into a day-to-day agreement. Along with the change in terms, Ludwig will earn $1.8 million in 2023. That figure is set to increase to $2 million in 2024. In his prior agreement, he started with making $1.2 million was set to get $100,000 raises each of the following two years. Colton Swan The linebackers coach’s extension runs until Jan. 31, 2025, and is worth $425,000. He got a $100,000 raise compared to last season. James Harding Utah’s assistant head coach signed a three-year rolling horizon deal for $800,000 on Dec. 8, 2022. He’s set to receive a $50,000 raise on Feb. 1, 2024, and a $25,000 raise in 2025. Freddie Whittingham The brother of Utah’s head coach got an extension on his contract, which now goes through Jan. 31, 2025. He signed the extension Feb. 2. Freddie Whittingham’s annual salary will now be $475,000, which is a $50,000 bump from his last deal. Sharrieff Shah Utah’s special teams coordinator got a one-year extension and a raise. Shah will now make $650,000 in 2023. His original contract for $600,000 ended on Jan. 31, 2025, but it will now end Jan. 31, 2026. Lewis Powell The defensive ends coach for the Utes was another who received a $50,000 raise and extension earlier this year. His salary increased to $475,000 from $425,000. Powell’s contract, like Shah, also now ends on Jan. 31, 2026. Luther Elliss The Utes legend turned defensive tackles coach will make $275,000 a year in 2023, an increase of $50,000 compared to last year. He got a one-year extension on his deal, which now ends on Jan. 1, 2025. Quinton Ganther The man who is in charge of molding Utah’s running backs also got a one-year extension and a $50,000 bump. Ganther’s deal now ends Jan. 31, 2025, and he’ll get a salary of $275,000 in 2023. Alvis Whitted The new wide receivers coach signed his one-year deal on Jan. 24 of this year. He will make $400,000.
