Ex-Cornhusker QB O'Brien heads to Colorado State

Former Nebraska quarterback Patrick O'Brien found a landing spot at Colorado State, announcing Friday that he will transfer to the school to continue his football career. O'Brien made his intentions known via Twitter. "I am so thankful to be given another opportunity to play football at another amazing university," he said. "With that I am excited to announce my commitment to Colorado State." The 6-foot-4, 230-pound O'Brien will have to sit out next year under NCAA transfer rules. He won't be eligible until the 2019 season, but he will then have two seasons left to play. As a redshirt freshman at Nebraska last fall, O'Brien completed 18 of 30 passes for 192 yards and one interception while backing up starter Tanner Lee. The former four-star recruit from Southern California is expected to compete next year for the starting job with Collin Hill, who was the projected starter for Colorado State in 2018 before he tore his ACL in the spring while playing recreational basketball. Hill played in five games last year and completed 75 of 129 passes for 1,096 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Without Hill for the 2018 season, the Rams may turn to graduate transfer quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels from Washington. O'Brien also reportedly considered Florida International and San Jose State. He had announced in mid-April after going through spring practice under new coach Scott Frost his intention to leave Nebraska.
