Florida reinstates four suspended players
Florida Gators running back Jordan Scarlett (25) runs with the ball against the Iowa Hawkeyes during the second quarter at Raymond James Stadium on Jan. 2, 2017.
Four of the nine Florida players suspended indefinitely before the start of last season for their part in credit card fraud have rejoined the Gators' team activities.
Running back Jordan Scarlett, wide receiver Rick Wells, and linebackers Ventrell Miller and James Houston are scheduled to join the team for offseason conditioning beginning Wednesday.
"All of our players understand the standards and expectations we have of them to be members of the Florida football program," new head coach Dan Mullen said in a statement.
From a football standpoint, Scarlett's reinstatement is the most significant. He led the Gators in rushing in 2016 with 889 yards and six touchdowns.
It is possible that all or some of the reinstated players may be suspended for some games in the 2018 season. That has yet to be determined, according to the Gainesville Sun.
The players' third-degree felony charges will be dropped if they meet requirements set by the State Attorney's Office.
A fifth suspended player, defensive end Keivonnis Davis, is still recovering from injuries sustained in a scooter accident. It is unclear whether his football career is over.
The four other players who were suspended for credit card fraud are no longer enrolled at Florida. That group includes wide receiver Antonio Callaway, defensive end Jordan Smith, defensive tackle Richerd Desir-Jones and offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort.
The nine players were suspended indefinitely last August as a result of their use of stolen credit card numbers to purchase a number of items.
Seven of the players -- Callaway, Desir-Jones, Scarlett, Houston, Wells, Miller and Davis -- accepted pre-trial intervention in October, which will allow charges to be dropped if they satisfy certain requirements.
