Jordan Palmer: QB Allen 'most talented dude I've seen'

Three of the top quarterback prospects for the NFL Draft -- Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, USC's Sam Darnold and UCLA's Josh Rosen -- already have performed at their school's Pro Days, drawing positive reviews. Wyoming's Josh Allen gets his chance Friday. Allen is one of the most polarizing prospects in the draft. NFLDraftScout.com senior analyst Dane Brugler rates him the 31st-best prospect on his Big Board, while fellow NFLDraftScout.com analyst Ron Rang ranks him 10th and climbing. Some draftniks claim Allen is in play for the No. 1 overall pick; others see a project who they wouldn't touch in the first round. Jordan Palmer, the former NFL quarterback who is training Allen and potential No. 1 pick Darnold, was unequivocal. "This kid Josh Allen is maybe the most talented dude I've ever seen -- size, arm talent, also just how intelligent he is, the kind of person he is," Palmer said Thursday on the Dan Patrick Show. "He's from a smaller school and he's had a really interesting route -- no offers, JUCO, Wyoming." Allen, at 6-foot-5 and 237 pounds, with a 4.75-second 40, looks like the NFL prototype more than any quarterback in the draft. Brugler writes: "While his physical traits make him scouting catnip, Allen remains undeveloped in several key areas of playing the position at a high level, including his accuracy. Nonetheless, his play also suggests that he still has plenty of room before hitting his football ceiling." Allen completed only 56.2 percent of his passes in college and struggled against better competition. Rang noted Allen's completion percentage, while a concern, was not much lower than former top-three picks Matt Ryan (59.9) and Matthew Stafford (57.1) in college. It shapes up to be a classic scouting conundrum: raw talent vs. production. "This doesn't necessarily mean he's the best I've ever seen, right? Just in terms of arm talent and his abilities, I haven't really seen anything like it," Palmer said. "He creates so much energy and it's so effortless. He was nice and trim at the Combine, but he'll play at 245 and he's really fast, too. He can start and stop. ... "Sam (Darnold) in most drafts is a lock to be No. 1. Obviously, I'm not going to sit here and pick one, but I think Josh is going to do so well tomorrow it's going to be really interesting."
