NFL notebook: Bills rookie QB Allen works with first team
Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback Josh Allen practiced with the first team on Monday.
Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback Josh Allen worked with the first-team offense during the start of Monday's practice.
Per Bills coach Sean McDermott, Allen and Nathan Peterman will rotate turns working with the first-team offense. Peterman, who had that honor on Sunday, was slated to work with the second team on Monday.
Fellow quarterback A.J. McCarron was injured during the Bills' preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Friday.
The Buffalo News previously reported that the 27-year-old received a hairline fracture in his collarbone. McDermott said Sunday that McCarron did suffer an injury but that tests are "not totally conclusive" before acknowledging that the quarterback will go for another medical opinion.
Allen, who was the seventh overall pick of the 2018 draft, replaced McCarron and led the Bills' first-team offense on an 80-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter against the Browns.
--Free agent running back Adrian Peterson worked out for the Washington Redskins, and he signed with the team later in the day.
The Redskins also announced they signed free-agent running back De'Veon Smith and waived tackle Cameron Jefferson as designated injured.
The Redskins needed immediate help at the running back position after a series of injuries at that spot. Derrius Guice suffered a season-ending torn ACL, and Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall suffered ankle injuries that sidelined them.
--Sebastian Janikowski won the Seattle Seahawks' competition to be the team's place-kicker this season.
The Seahawks announced that they have cut Jason Myers, leaving Janikowski as the only kicker on the roster.
Myers was the Jacksonville Jaguars' kicker in 2015 and 2016 but was released after six games of the 2017 season. He made 11 of 15 field-goal attempts last season and 64 of 79 for his career, with his longest field goal being a 58-yarder in 2015.
--The Los Angeles Rams have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension with offensive lineman Rob Havenstein.
The 26-year-old Havenstein is now under contract through the 2022 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported the deal is worth more than $32 million.
Since being a second-round selection in 2015, Havenstein has started all 43 career regular-season games in which he has played. He also started one playoff game.
--Chicago Bears cornerback Deiondre' Hall has been suspended without pay for the first game of the 2018 regular season for violating the NFL policy and program on substances of abuse.
The 24-year-old Hall, who was a fourth-round pick by the Bears in 2016, has played in 10 NFL games in his two NFL seasons. He has one career interception and that came in the 2016 season, when he recorded seven total tackles.
--The Tampa Bay Buccaneers addressed their immediate need for interior linemen by signing veteran defensive tackle Jerel Worthy.
The Buccaneers announced the signing of Worthy one day after claiming defensive tackle Adam Reth.
The moves come with defensive tackles Vita Vea and Mitch Unrein out with injuries.
Worthy was a second-round pick in 2012 by the Green Bay Packers and spent two years in Green Bay before being traded to the Patriots. He did not make the regular-season roster in New England and signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2015.
--The Seattle Seahawks granted punter Jon Ryan's request to be released.
The 36-year-old Ryan had two years remaining on his contract and was set to receive a base salary of $2.6 million in 2018 and $3 million the following season.
The Seahawks will turn to rookie punter Michael Dickson, who was selected in the fifth round in 2018 out of Texas. Dickson won the Ray Guy Award as the best punter in college football last year.
--Chicago Bears linebacker Leonard Floyd had surgery to repair a broken hand, coach Matt Nagy said.
Floyd sustained the injury during the Bears' 24-23 victory in Saturday's preseason game over the Denver Broncos.
The Bears hope Floyd will be ready to return for the Sept. 9 opener against the Green Bay Packers.
--The Denver Broncos placed guard/tackle Menelik Watson on injured reserve.
Watson is expected to be released once he recovers from his pectoral injury, multiple media outlets reported.
The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Watson signed a three-year, $18.75 million contract with the Broncos on March 10, 2017, that included a $4 million signing bonus.
Watson started seven games in his first season with the Broncos. He sustained a foot injury in the Oct. 15 loss to the New York Giants and then missed the following game.
--The Minnesota Vikings released Kai Forbath in a move that puts rookie Daniel Carlson in line to be the team's kicker for the upcoming season.
Carlson, who was selected in the fifth round this year, made both of his field-goal attempts -- including a 57-yard kick -- in the team's first preseason game against the Denver Broncos. He also improved to 4 of 4 on extra point attempts by making his lone try versus the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.
--Cleveland Browns cornerback E.J. Gaines sustained a right knee sprain and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.
While the Browns were not specific, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that it's an MCL sprain and that Gaines likely will be out three to four weeks.
Gaines, who signed with the Browns in March, crumpled to the ground after suffering the injury during Sunday's practice. The 26-year-old was carted off the field by the team's medical staff.
--New England Patriots wide receiver Kenny Britt admitted that an ailing hamstring isn't doing him any favors in his bid to make the team.
While Britt was removed from the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 4, he hasn't been a full participant in practice.
Britt has been reduced to warming up with teammates and participating in individual drills. The 29-year-old then works out with the rest of the rehabilitating players.
Britt is bidding for a roster spot while Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Eric Decker are getting opportunities.
--Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham was activated from the physically unable to perform list.
Graham, who is working his way back from ankle surgery, is entering the final season of his four-year, $26 million contract.
A team captain, Graham sustained his injury during last season's playoffs but was able to play through it.
Graham made his mark in Super Bowl LII after stripping Patriots quarterback Tom Brady with 2:09 remaining in the fourth quarter, helping the Eagles preserve a 41-33 victory.
--San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects cornerback Richard Sherman to practice this week.
Sherman has yet to appear in San Francisco's first two preseason games. He was held out of practice before the Aug. 9 game against the Dallas Cowboys and was eased back into team portions of practice before sitting out Saturday's game against the Houston Texans.
If Sherman can ramp up his activities at practice this week, Shanahan believes he will play in this Saturday's game against the Indianapolis Colts.
