NFL notebook: Giants' Beckham to sit out Sunday

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will not play in Sunday's matchup against the Washington Redskins. Beckham was ruled out by the Giants on Saturday because of a quadriceps injury that cropped up in Friday's practice. The team announced the mercurial wideout would not make the trip to Washington. He practiced fully on Wednesday and Thursday but was limited Friday and Saturday, when the determination was made to keep him out of Sunday's matchup. Beckham reached 1,000 yards receiving for the fourth time in five years. He has 77 receptions for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns for New York (4-8), which remains mathematically alive for a playoff berth. -- Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes was fined $53,482 for unsportsmanlike conduct on Saturday in the wake of his confrontation with umpire Roy Ellison after last Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins. Hughes was shown on video yelling at an official in the tunnel of Miami's Hard Rock Stadium after Buffalo's 21-17 loss. The video showed Hughes accusing the official of calling him a b--. He continued to shout at the official while being restrained by a Buffalo staffer and Bills offensive lineman John Miller yelling "I'll catch you" before adding: "Guarantee it! Gonna knock his (expletive) out when I see him on the streets." Ellison was placed on administrative leave on Tuesday, but ESPN reported he is not expected to be suspended. Ellison, who is in his 16th season as an NFL official, was previously suspended one game without pay in 2013 for making a profane and derogatory statement to Washington Redskins offensive lineman Trent Williams in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Hughes was not the only player assessed a fine for behavior on Saturday. Tennessee Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan was fined $26,379 for yelling at referee Jerome Boger after a 26-22 win over the New York Jets. Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith and Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Jatavis Brown were fined $26,379 for unnecessary roughness incidents. Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh was fined $20,054 for a horse collar tackle and Detroit Lions defensive end Ezekiel Ansah was fined the same amount for an illegal hit on quarterback Jared Goff. Also fined $20,054 were Baltimore Ravens linebacker Za'Darius Smith for roughing the passer and Chicago Bears quarterback Chase Daniel for a horse collar tackle on an interception. Kansas City's Eric Murray, Oakland's Jared Cook and Atlanta's Vic Beasley Jr. were assessed $13,369 fines for unsportsmanlike conduct. San Francisco 49ers linebacker Malcolm Smith was fined $10,026 for unnecessary roughness, and Jacksonville teammates C.J. Reavis (unnecessary roughness) and Ronnie Harrison (taunting) were fined the same amount. -- The Minnesota Vikings removed wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the injury report Saturday. Diggs, who had been limited in practice Thursday and Friday because of a knee injury, will be good to go for Monday night's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. Minnesota (6-5-1) holds the sixth and final playoff spot in the NFC, one-half game ahead of Carolina, Philadelphia and Washington and a half-game behind Seattle (7-5). Diggs already has matched his career high with 84 receptions despite sitting out a win over Detroit on Nov. 4. He also has 839 yards and six touchdowns. -- Already depleted in their secondary, the Philadelphia Eagles placed cornerback Jalen Mills on injured reserve on Saturday. Mills has missed the last four games with a foot injury and was ruled out for Sunday's game in Dallas. Mills was injured early in the second half of Philadelphia's 24-18 win over Jacksonville in London on Oct. 28 and now his third season is over. In eight games this season, Mills had 50 tackles and 14 passes defended. Last year, Mills became a full-time starter and totaled 86 tackles, 22 passes defended and three interceptions. To replace Mills on the roster, undrafted rookie free agent defensive tackle Bruce Hector was added to the elevated roster and is insurance since defensive tackle Tim Jernigan is questionable for Sunday with back spasms. Hector has appeared in six games and was on the practice squad for the other six games, including the last four. He played a career-high 21 snaps in a 21-17 loss to Carolina in Week 7. -- The Cleveland Browns activated cornerback Terrance Mitchell from injured reserve on Saturday. Mitchell will return from a wrist injury for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. Hel has been out since fracturing a wrist in the second quarter at Oakland in Week 4 and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 2. He practiced this week and was designated to return from injured reserve. Mitchell was highly productive in Cleveland's first three games with 19 tackles, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one interception. Last season for the Kansas City Chiefs, he set career highs with 53 tackles, 18 passes defended and four interceptions.
