NFL notebook: Jets LB Pierre-Louis draws suspension
Redskins wide receiver Robert Davis is out for the season after injuring a knee in practice.
New York Jets linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis was suspended one game for a violation of the league's policy on substances of abuse, the team announced.
Pierre-Louis was arrested after a traffic stop in January as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Police also cited him for driving without a valid license and failure to display a valid plate or current registration.
The 26-year-old Pierre-Louis reached a plea deal in Johnson County, Kan., shortly after signing a two-year contract with the Jets. The marijuana charge will be dropped if he successfully completes a one-year probationary period, per reports.
Pierre-Louis had 25 tackles in 14 games last season after a training-camp trade brought him from Seattle to Kansas City.
-- The Washington Redskins lost a third player to a season-ending injury after wide receiver Robert Davis went down in practice.
Davis sustained a broken tibia and multiple ligament damage to the outside of his right knee while getting tangled with cornerback Danny Johnson during a seven-on-seven drill in Saturday's practice, ESPN reported. He will undergo surgery from Dr. Daniel Cooper in Dallas.
Coach Jay Gruden confirmed Sunday that Davis will be placed on injured reserve and he is expected to be sidelined nine to 12 months.
The 23-year-old Davis joins rookie running back Derrius Guice and tight end Manasseh Garner on the sidelines. The latter two tore ACLs in Thursday's preseason loss to the New England Patriots.
-- Free-agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland was slated to visit with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, multiple media outlets reported.
Breeland has been seeking a job since failing a physical with the Carolina Panthers during the offseason because of a toe injury, nullifying a three-year, $24 million deal with the club.
A fourth-round draft pick of Washington in 2014, Breeland started 15 games for the Redskins last season. He had 50 tackles (37 solo), broke up 19 pass attempts and returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdown.
Breeland, 26, has visited a number of clubs, including the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots.
-- The San Francisco 49ers are holding their breath after running back Jerick McKinnon injured his right knee during Sunday's practice.
The injury occurred during team drills. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, McKinnon was seen grabbing the back of his right knee. The team said McKinnon needs an MRI.
McKinnon is expected to shoulder the ground game after signing a four-year, $30 million contract in March. With Minnesota last season, McKinnon rushed for 530 yards and three touchdowns.
The top backup running back, Matt Breida, suffered a shoulder injury in San Francisco's preseason opener against the Cowboys.
-- A fan donned a yellow jersey, pads and a helmet and briefly found his way past security in an attempt to work out with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the fan -- who was wearing former Steeler Troy Polamalu's No. 43 jersey -- was discovered to be an imposter by a team official. Polamalu retired after the 2014 season and the Steelers have not reissued that number to another player.
The fan, whose name remains unknown, attempted to get near star wideout Antonio Brown before being escorted off the Saint Vincent College campus in Latrobe, Pa. Brown was shown on video having a hearty laugh after the brief encounter.
It remains unclear if the fan will face any charges.
-- Oakland Raiders cornerback Gareon Conley is expected to return to practice on Monday.
Gonley has been sidelined since the first practice of camp on July 27 with a hip injury. He played in just two games during his rookie season before a shin injury ultimately required season-ending surgery.
Conley participated in position drills before the Raiders' 16-10 preseason win over the Detroit Lions on Friday, much to the pleasure of coach Jon Gruden.
Conley, who is listed at 6-foot and 195 pounds, had seven tackles in two games last season after being selected with the 24th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.
-- Arizona Cardinals linebacker Jeremy Cash was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury in Saturday night's 24-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, according to multiple reports.
Cash was injured in the third quarter while attempting to make a tackle. Replays show Cash's leg twisting awkwardly.
Before being injured, Cash rumbled 12 yards with a fumble recovery for a touchdown that gave the Cardinals a 14-3 lead.
Cash played nine games in his first two seasons with the Carolina Panthers before joining the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns practice squads.
-- The Arizona Cardinals didn't waste any time trying to bolster its linebacking corps after Jeremy Cash was lost for the season. On Sunday, the Cardinals were set to sign veteran defender Gerald Hodges, according to multiple reports.
Per a league source, Hodges signed a one-year deal.
Hodges was drafted by the Vikings and traded to the 49ers during the 2015 season. The 27-year old most recently played for New Orleans. He has appeared in 65 games, and made 25 starts.
-- The Chicago Bears on Saturday night signed running back Knile Davis and released offensive lineman Kaleb Johnson.
The six-year veteran spent most of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, where current Bears head coach Matt Nagy became familiar with him. In 55 games, Davis scored 11 touchdowns while rushing for 800 yards.
He was traded to Green Bay in 2016 and also had a second stint with the Chiefs.
Davis is buried behind Jordan Howard, Tarik Cohen, Benny Cunningham, Taquan Mizzell and Ryan Nall on the Bears' depth chart but could help in the return game.
-- The Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday signed quarterback Christain Hackenberg and released free agent center Ian Park. Details of the contract were not revealed.
Hackenberg was drafted in the second round by the New York Jets in 2016 and has universally been considered a big bust.
Once viewed as a potential franchise quarterback, Hackenberg has never played in an NFL game. He spent some time this offseason with the Oakland Raiders but was recently released.
If he is able to stick with the Eagles, he will serve as backup to Carson Wentz, Nick Foles and perhaps Nate Sudfeld.
-- The Indianapolis Colts on Sunday signed free agent wide receiver Matt Hazel and free agent running back Branden Oliver. The team also waived wide receiver Dres Anderson and placed wide receiver Deon Cain on injured reserve.
Hazel rejoins the Colts after spending time on the team's active roster and practice squad last year. He also spent time on the Cleveland Browns' practice squad in 2017.
Hazel has appeared in nine career games (one start) in his time with the Browns (2017), Colts (2017), Washington Redskins (2016), Buffalo Bills (2016) and Miami Dolphins (2014-15). In 2017, he played in four games with Indianapolis.
Oliver has played in 30 career games and has made eight starts during the last four seasons with the Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers. He has totaled 226 carries for 773 yards and three touchdowns, 55 receptions for 409 yards and one touchdown and nine kickoff returns for 219 yards.
-- Maybe Tom Brady does have Steve DeBerg in his crosshairs.
DeBerg has the distinction of being the oldest quarterback at 44 years and 279 days old to start an NFL game. Brady has talked about retirement, but the 41-year-old is set for this year and according to details of his new contract obtained by the Boston Globe appears ready to hang around for at least another year, and maybe even longer.
The Globe obtained details of Brady's contract, which included a "salary advance," meaning he will receive a $10 million signing bonus and $4 million in base salary as opposed to $14 million in base salary.
His new contract increases dead cap money, which will count against New England's salary cap should Brady be released, traded or decides to retire. This, the Globe reported, implies that Brady will be back for the 2019 season and put him two years closer to DeBerg's record.
-- On Sunday at Miami Dolphins training camp, quarterback Ryan Tannehill opened some eyes when he booted running back Kalen Ballage out of the huddle after the rookie missed an assignment that led to a sack.
Tannehill wasn't finished making his point with Ballage. During a break in the offense, Tannehill sought out Ballage on the sideline and could be seen giving the Arizona State product an earful.
Dolphins second-year head coach Adam Gase supported Tannehill 100 percent and Ballage accepted the criticism, saying the missed assignment is part of the learning curve and he has to learn from those mistakes.
-- The Buffalo Bills signed Tyrunn Walker and released fellow defensive tackle John Hughes with an injury settlement, the team announced Sunday.
Walker collected 22 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble while appearing in all 16 games last season with the Los Angeles Rams. The 28-year-old has 85 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 58 career games with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions and Rams.
Hughes, a 2012 third-round pick by the Cleveland Browns, signed with the Bills in late July. He injured a groin during Thursday's game against the Carolina Panthers.
-- The Green Bay Packers welcomed left tackle David Bakhtiari back to practice.
Bakhtiari sprained his ankle on Aug. 4 and was carted off the field during Family Night. Plenty of those at the Packers facility feared the anchor of their offensive line would miss significant time. But a little more than a week later, the five-year veteran was back at practice.
According to profootballtalk.com, Bakhtiari didn't take part in team drills, but just his presence is a sign that his injury has responded well to treatment.
Tight end Jimmy Graham, who had missed a handful of practices as well as the preseason opener, also was back at practice Sunday. Graham had banged knees with a teammate.
-- On Saturday night in Johnny Manziel's second game as the Montreal Alouettes' starting quarterback, he completed 16 of 26 passes for 168 yards with no interceptions. And although the Alouettes lost to the Ottawa Redblacks, Manziel drew praise.
Just a week before on Aug. 3 in his first start, Manziel threw four first-half interceptions in a 50-11 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
After two games, Manziel has completed 27 of 36 attempts for 272 yards, no touchdowns, and four picks.
-- Kirk Cousins was perfect in his preseason debut and fellow quarterback Case Keenum found himself nearly at the opposite end of the spectrum in the same game.
Cousins completed all four of his throws for 42 yards and a touchdown in the Minnesota Vikings' 42-28 exhibition victory over the Denver Broncos on Saturday night. He capped his lone drive by firing the ball into the chest of Stefon Diggs, who beat Isaac Yiadom on a 1-yard quick slant.
-- Denver Broncos backup quarterback Paxton Lynch was booed off the field during Saturday's preseason game against the visiting Minnesota Vikings.
Lynch, who was the 26th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, completed just 6 of 11 passes for 24 yards with an interception.
"There's always things to work on, obviously," Lynch said, per the team website. "You can go out there and throw four touchdowns and 300 yards and there's still things to work on."
Broncos coach Vance Joseph was asked if Chad Kelly would receive work with the second team after the quarterback completed 14 of 21 passes for 177 yards with two touchdowns and one interception against the Vikings.
"We'll see," Joseph said of Kelly, who was the 253rd and final pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. "We'll watch the tape and see where we are. Obviously Case (Keenum) is the starter, so that's my main concern."
Keenum struggled in his first start, completing just 1 of 4 passes for five yards.
Lynch has posted a 1-3 mark in four career starts with four touchdowns and four interceptions.
-- Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Josh Rosen showed both some positives and negatives during the team's 24-17 preseason win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday.
Rosen saw constant pressure while playing with second-string offensive linemen for the majority of his time on the field.
Selected with the 10th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, Rosen escaped the pocket and had a 21-yard completion over the middle to tight end Gabe Holmes. He completed 6 of 13 passes for 41 yards without a touchdown or interception, although he would have had one of the latter had Chargers cornerback Desmond King held onto one errant toss.
