UConn RB O'Reilly suffers season-ending knee injury

University of Connecticut running back Donevin O'Reilly will miss the season with a torn ACL, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday. Huskies coach Randy Edsall told reporters that O'Reilly suffered the injury on a non-contact play in Monday's practice. He will undergo season-ending surgery on Friday. "Already working towards the process of getting back on the field as soon as possible," wrote O'Reilly on his Twitter account. "We have a great athletic training staff here at UConn that has my back through the whole rehab process. Can't wait to get rolling again for UConn Nation." A former walk-on, O'Reilly was recently awarded a scholarship and was in line to be the team's starting running back. "That's the stuff as a coach that it's like, 'Why?'" said Edsall, per the Hartford Courant. "That kid put so much into it, he's worked extremely hard. He was really the No. 1 tailback, and to see him go down, I just feel for him." The injury comes a week after Edsall revealed that running back Nate Hopkins was leaving the team and planned to transfer to an undetermined school. Freshman Xavier Scott is expected to take over as the No. 1 tailback.
