Va. Tech QB Jackson fractures fibula, out indefinitely
Virginia Tech Hokies quarterback Josh Jackson scrambles away from pressure against the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium on Sept. 3.
Virginia Tech quarterback Josh Jackson is sidelined indefinitely with a fractured left fibula, coach Justin Fuente announced.
Jackson sustained the injury after a 19-yard run in the second half of Saturday's upset loss to Old Dominion. He was carted off the field and returned to the sideline on crutches with his leg in a protective boot.
"I feel badly for Josh," Fuente said in a statement. "He's a competitive, tough young man. He just kind of got landed on wrong on the play, but know he'll come back better than ever.
"We turn to Ryan Willis and he performed pretty well last week when he went in there. He's competitive and he's been training and working for this opportunity and it's up to everyone else to step up their game as well and help him out and support him."
Willis took over the Hokies' offense, which scored its final touchdown on the next drive before the Monarchs went on to post a 49-35 win over the Hokies.
Willis completed 9 of 18 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. He also ran four times for 30 yards and is expected to start this week against Duke.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Hendon Hooker and freshman Quincy Patterson are also available for Virginia Tech.
Jackson, who is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday, has completed 62 percent of his passes for 575 yards with five touchdowns and one interception this season.
Fuente said it's possible Jackson could return "late this season."
