Aztecs get commitment from Mater Dei Catholic's Isaiah Buxton

12/11/2023 Mater Dei Catholic High School cornerback Isaiah Buxton made an official visit to San Diego State over the weekend along with a handful of other recruits. Most of the players had previously made verbal commitments to SDSU. On Sunday, Buxton joined them.

“I’m home,” Buxton tweeted, linking a collage of Images that included wearing a No. 1 SDSU jersey, along with a picture photo of Snapdragon Stadium and the word “Committed. ” Buxton, and SDSU’s other recruits, must wait until the NCAA early signing period begins Dec.

20 to make it official. He originally committed to Arizona in April before decommitting last month. Buxton was among recruits this weekend who visited the SDSU campus and toured Snapdragon Stadium before taking in Saturday night’s Aztecs’ 63-62 men’s basketball victory over UC Irvine at Viejas Arena.

“SDSU felt at home,” Buxton said. “I feel comfortable and myself here. Plus, it’s my home and I will have good support around.

“The League can find me anywhere, so why not put my hometown team on the map in the process?” The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Buxton is rated among the top 100 high school prospects in the state by 247Sports. com. He had 36 tackles and three interceptions this season, according to MaxPreps.

com. Buxton said he plans to enroll at SDSU for the upcoming semester, allowing him to participate in spring football and acclimate himself to the campus and the team before the 2024-25 school year begins. SDSU’s starting cornerbacks from the past two seasons, senior Noah Tumblin and junior Dez Malone, both entered the transfer portal, so there will be an opportunity to compete for starting spots.

“I’m going to put my head down and work,” Buxton said. “If I do everything correctly, I will be able to be an impact freshman. ” Buxton is joined in the Class of 2024 by two other local players — Carlsbad High School wide receiver Will Cianfrini and Mater Dei Catholic running back Anthony McMillian Jr.

— among the 10 others who have made verbal commitments. “It was nice knowing Anthony was going,” Buxton said. “But at the end of the day, I made this decision because it was best for me.

Anthony was just a plus. ” Buxton maintained contact throughout the recruiting process with SDSU cornerbacks coach Demetrius Sumler, who remained on staff when Sean Lewis replaced Brady Hoke as head coach. The senior also spoke with Lewis and he said the new coach “loved my film.

” On the energy he believes the new coach and his assistants are bringing to the program, Buxton said, “The new staff has the city bought back in, and that’s important. ” Transfer news Two former SDSU players in the NCAA transfer portal announced their landing spots Sunday on social media. Both are headed to Power Five schools — tight end Cameron Harpole to Arizona State and Malone to Oklahoma.
