Who's injured, who participated during Wisconsin football's first preseason practice
Aug 2, 2023 Updated 7 hrs ago
PLATTEVILLE — Two former tight ends weren’t the only departures for the University of Wisconsin football program as it started preseason camp Wednesday.
Cornerbacks Amaun Williams and Lee Hutton, wide receiver Cole Toennies and linebacker Luna Larson were not on the Badgers’ training camp roster released Wednesday. A UW spokesperson confirmed they are no longer on the team. They join tight ends Clay Cundiff and Jack Eschenbach.
Williams played in 11 games last season and one contest in 2021, according to UW’s participation logs. He recorded only two tackles in 2022, but he flashed at times during Badgers practices open to media in the spring.
Four players who are in the program are not on the fall camp roster currently, according to a UW spokesperson: long snappers Duncan McKinley and Zach Zei, kicker Gavin Lahm and offensive lineman Peyton Lange.
Health updates
Two key transfers returned to the field Wednesday. Defensive lineman Darian Varner, a Temple transfer who missed spring practices due to injury, took part in individual drills and some team periods. Former Cincinnati offensive lineman Jake Renfro was seen performing individual position work and sharing second-team reps at center with Joe Huber. Renfro worked as the first-team center early in spring before suffering a leg injury.
4 observations from Wisconsin football's first training camp practice
True freshman wide receiver Trech Kekahuna dressed but did not participate in practice. He was seen on the sidelines with a protective boot on his left leg and using crutches. Two other first-year players, tight end Tucker Ashcraft and safety Braedyn Moore, wore yellow jerseys that are supposed to designate no contact.
Outside linebacker Aaron Witt, who has not played the last two seasons, was seen working with staff on the sideline but did not participate in individual or team periods.
Tight end Cam Large was at practice but was in street clothes.
Notable weight changes
Oklahoma State transfer Bryson Green physically stands out in UW’s wide receiver room, and it appears he’s added more to his stature from the winter and early spring. UW listed Green, who did not participate in team periods this spring, at 6 foot 1 and 215 pounds. That is an inch taller and 10 pounds heavier than what the program posted on its spring roster.

Fellow wide receiver Keontez Lewis was designated at 196 pounds, up nine pounds from the Badgers’ spring roster, while safety Kamo’i Latu jumped 11 pounds to 207.
Tight ends JT Seagreaves (up 11 pounds to 245 pounds) and Angel Toombs (up 10 to 245) were also noticeable changes on UW’s fall camp roster.

A UW spokesperson confirmed that the program updates players’ weights twice a year: once after winter conditioning for its spring camp roster, and once after summer conditioning for the fall camp roster.
